Bombs have had a terrible impact on coral reefs throughout the Coral Triangle. Now a group of scientists, dive enthusiasts and filmmakers have come up with an ingenious technology to detect when and where bombs are going off, so authorities can respond immediately...
There may finally be a genuinely workable solution to the global problem of bomb fishing...
Applying the same technology that police offers in the US to combat gun violoence, scientists and engineers are developing a groundbreaking system for detecting underwater explosions. The technology is being developed and tested in Sabah, Malaysia, one of the jewels of the Coral Triangle. A partnership between Silicon Valley based technology company SST, leading underwater filmmakers Scubazoo and conservation organisation Teng Hoi, Stop Fish Bombing is an NGO with global ambitions to roll out its technology to help prevent bomb fishing around the world, saving marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of the communities that rely on them. Bomb fishing is not only destructive, it's dangerous and it's not uncommon for practitioners to maim themselves when a bomb explodes prematurely. Strong preventative measures would act as a strong deterrant. Check out the beautifully shot video below, directed and filmed by Scubazoo. Check out their website and get involved!

A Bajau Laut girl collects shellfish near the village of Torosiaje in Sulawesi. The Bajau used to live nomadic lives at sea though most have now moved to stilt villages like this one. Torosiaje is a kilometre out to see and can only be reached by boat, however. A few of the Bajau in the area still live for most of the year on their Lepa boats. China just put surface to air missiles on one of the disputed 'islands' in the South China Sea, in the latest escalation. Even geopolitical playgrounds have their bullies - but despite what many regard as a unilateral land grab by Beijing (in fact there is no land, so they had to construct it!), all the neighbouring countries and the international community need to find a long term diplomatic solution. We interviewed a marine biologist who had an ingenious idea, one that recognises not just the strategic importance of this tract of ocean, but the vital role of its marine ecosystems in supporting the livelihoods of millions of people...thecoraltriangle.com
