Western Province is among the most popular destinations in the Solomon Islands’ nascent tourism industry and rightly so – visitors here discover a mosaic of jungle drenched islands, fringing coral reefs, lagoons and bone white beaches that are the very embodiment of the South Pacific. There are a number of dive & adventure resorts scattered throughout the region.


OVERVIEW

Western Province is among the most popular destinations in the Solomon Islands’ nascent tourism industry and rightly so – visitors here discover a mosaic of jungle drenched islands, fringing coral reefs, lagoons and bone white beaches that are the very embodiment of the South Pacific. There are 11 major islands in total and besides the incredible reefs, there are seagrass beds where dugongs cruise as well as some very special wreck dives as the Solomon Islands saw some major battles during World War II. The province is also home to the largest uninhabited island in the Pacific – a treasure trove of both terrestrial and marine biodiversity.

STAY

Western Province boasts a wide variety of accommodations, from simple home stays to luxury resorts and of course numerous dive operations. Dive and surf safaris are another popular way of getting the most out of Western Province. One of the region’s jewels is Tetepare – an uninhabited island that is best described as the Galapagos of the Pacific. Only limited numbers of visitors are allowed on the island at any one time in order not to disturb the incredible terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

PLAY

Most head to Western Province for the diving and snorkelling – the reefs here are among the richest in the world and you also have a good chance of seeing big pelagic species and whales that migrate through these waters. Surfing is also an emerging sport in the Solomon Islands – surf safaris are a great way to discover the regions many breaks – and of course, there’s no one to drop in on your wave. Kayaking is another great way to explore the islands and a number of resorts can help you organise day trips or even longer excursions. Add to this fascinating local cultures, notable for the incredible linguistic diversity they contain, stunning scenery and delicious cuisine that’s big on seafood and you can see why the region is hitting radars.
